One of the first treatments Dr. Tyler Morehart may recommend for gum disease is scaling and root planing. Scaling and root planing can help stop the progression of gum disease in its tracks so that you can begin the process of regaining your oral health and smile.
The goal of scaling and root planing is to remove the disease-causing factors in your mouth and prevent the disease from advancing any further than it already has. Scaling and root planing is a two-step treatment:
- Scaling – scaling removes the plaque and tartar from the surfaces of your teeth
- Root planing – root planing cleans your tooth roots, removing bacteria and plaque and smoothing them to remove bacterial toxins and decrease inflammation
Most scaling and root planing treatments can be completed comfortably and without the use of an anesthetic. However, our dentist and team offer several types of anesthetic and other comfort options to ensure that your experience is as comfortable as possible. We may also split your scaling and root planing procedure into several different appointments in order to treat one section of your mouth at a time.
Depending on your needs our dentist may also recommend additional periodontal treatments. Scaling and root planing is often combined with antibiotic treatment and other therapies to produce the best possible results for your oral health and smile. Following the completion of your treatment we will also schedule a series of regular visits for you to receive periodontal maintenance.
